The authors report a case of tumor that contained eggs of Schistosoma japonicum parasites. The patient was a 57-year-old woman with a history of parasites, constipation and recent bloody diarrhea. Sigmoid colon cancer was diagnosed and an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon was removed. The tumor contained parasite eggs, as did the lymph nodes.
The scars formed around the parasite eggs are called granulomas. Granulomas surrounding schistosomes have been found in liver, intestine, skin, lung, brain, adrenal glands and muscles. The relationship between schistosomiasis and colon cancer was discovered in the 1970’s. The authors found that there are toxic products produced by the Schistosome japonica that are toxic to genes and can cause genetic mutations, which could be the cause of the associated cancers.
CONCLUSION: “…deposited schistosome ova play a possible role in the carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer.” All patients with a previous Schistosoma japonicum infection should be screened for colon cancer.
