Suppression of the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria is important for oral plaque control. Plaque biofilm control is important for control of problems with teeth and gums. Teeth brushing and flossing are important in control of plaque, but most people do not brush and floss properly. Chlorhexidine in mouth washes helps control plaque, but can have serious side effects. It is banned in Japan because of a high incidence of people having serious reactions, including shock.
Probiotics are bacteria which have health benefits when given in small amounts. In fact, probiotic friendly bacteria are useful in controlling bacteria which are hiding in plaque. Probiotics which produce lactic acid can produce antibacterial chemicals and activate the human immune system. Most lactic acid bacteria produce acid and cause caries.
Lactobacillus salivarius T12711 (TSI) bacteria are sensitive to acid and do not cause caries. A trial of giving patients TSI for 12 weeks resulted in reduced counts of P. gingivalis in dental plaque. However, further testing is needed.
Immunization with antibodies to bacteria grown on egg yolk is also beneficial in controlling oral bacteria around the teeth.
CONCLUSION: Plaque control can result in better P. gingivalis control, but further studies are needed to understand the process of how probiotics work.
