The authors did a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 513 patient’s with Alzheimer’s type dementia. They were placed on Ginkgo biloba 24% extract 120 mg. or 240 mg. per day for 24 weeks. Careful records were kept of the patient’s behavior.
There was not marked improvement in the average patient’s condition on the Ginkgo biloba extract. However, the patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms on placebo showed decline in their functioning. The patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms on Ginkgo biloba showed better “cognitive performance and global assessment scores.”
CONCLUSION: The author’s evaluation was that the study was “inconclusive” in spite of the improvement in the neuropsychiatric symptoms of the patients on 120 mg. of Ginkgo biloba 24% extract. The 240 mg. dose did not provide much improvement over 120 mg.
