The current medical treatments for high total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels are statin drugs, which can have serious side effects. Additionally, they often do not reduce blood levels enough. This is important since high cholesterol, increased triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol levels are seen often with atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.
Bergamot* (Citrus bergamia Risso) has significant cholesterol lowering effects, and even contains some flavonoids which act as natural statins. High flavonoid diets reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Bergamot also has antioxidant activity.
CONCLUSION: Bergamot has antioxidant activity and the ability to lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol.
NOTE: *Bergamot gives the strong taste to Earl Grey Tea.
