Chromium is an essential trace mineral which must be consumed for normal functioning, importantly, and it may be used to treat diabetes. Chromium supports insulin activity and increases the action of enzymes which digest sugars. The symptoms of chromium deficiency are the symptoms of type II diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, high fasting blood sugar, and disorders of the blood fatty acids. Chromium treats high blood sugars, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and high LDL-cholesterol. (Chromium is not toxic, except when there has been industrial exposure.)
The use of certain foods high in chromium and supplements can treat diabetes, reduce the need for insulin, and reduce risk factors of heart and blood vessel disease. It is difficult to get sufficient chromium from one’s diet, but it is especially high in a high bran breakfast cereal, broccoli, green beans, some beers and wine. Chromium intake is better when a person consumes lots of fruits, vegetables, grains, and very small amounts of simple sugars.
Supplements range from 100 to 1000 micrograms per day, and chromium works best in people whose tissue levels of chromium are mild to severely low. This can be evaluated by hair analysis or by toe nail analysis.
