Bromelain from pineapple has been suggested for supportive therapy in cancers. The authors studied bromelain against leukemic and mammary (breast) cancer cells in the laboratory in which they examined a number of factors relating to the toxicity of the cells.
The study showed that the cancer patient’s monocyte blood cells have an impaired ability to fight cancer cells. On the basis of the laboratory results, it is suggested that bromelain improves the ability of patient’s monocyte cells to fight breast cancer cells. This could explain the proposed antitumor activity of bromelain.
CONCLUSION: The authors demonstrate evidence of the benefit of bromelain to improve the ability of monocyte blood cells in fighting a specific type of breast cancer cell.
